Peek You Rocks, Spock is a Little Bland

PeekYou.com and Spock.com are services that let you search people online.

Looking at them both, my first thought is I like the friendly welcome PeekYou.com shows me. Spock has more of a bland directory feel to it, while PeekYou.com is showing me fun personality. I’m actually going to take you through both of them, so we can do a side-by-side comparison of these people seekers!
Searching in Spock.com, one of the things I noticed right away is that the results aren’t brought up in alphabetical order! Yikes! I have to scroll through pages to find who I’m looking for. There has to be an easier way. What I do like is that you can change your view from list to grid in the top right hand corner, and it makes it much easier to view. I did finally find what I was looking for, it just took a little extra time.
When I did the search on PeekYou.com, I was surprised to pop my last name in, and came up right at the top of the list about 329 people with my last name! That’s web presence, huh? They don’t only have some of my blogs listed, but they also have my book, my articles and more all in one place! I have to say, I’m really impressed by how it’s all together. I didn’t even submit my information, but it found me and many of my projects. It even has tags for me. I’m laughing, because it also shows my age. Who told? Wow! It even knows I’m a commenter on Lifehacker! That’s some kind of social networking tool. I clipped this from the page. There I am.

The other thing I like about Peek You is that I can click on pretty much anything. I can click on my town name, and be shown other people who share that information or tag. I almost feel a little naked and exposed. I don’t attach my name to all my projects, and now there I am! It’s fascinating to see everything it has. You’ll want to scope out your name, and you can edit some of the things. It has me listed in two towns. No clue how California got in there, I’m a Jersey Girl baby!
It even tells you how many people have peeked you. Had I known 25 people would have peeked me today, I would have put on a little make-up. (grin) It’s really a cool tool. You can see so many pieces of information. I’m going to edit my information, but to do that I have to sign in.
Okay, I’m back and edited one or two things. I like that once I register, I can go in and change some of my information. One or two links I didn’t want posted, so I removed those, but then I also added another. It’s customizable by me, once I’m registered.
There are 50+ million profiles online all ready! How do they do that. Hey! I’m going to check and see if my husband is listed. He doesn’t have too much of a web presence, so it would be an interesting comparison.
I went over to Spock.com, and did a search on myself. Nothing, nada, not one iota of information is available. How can you not be impressed with the obvious differences between them.
I’ve now gone and searched a popular online personality. I was able to find him in Spock, and his profile. It does have some good information on it, as well as pictures, but it’s not quite consistent. Tags are large up top, the links that lead to his sites are small, and almost like an over site. I guess it’s my personality, but I find it lacking personality and stiff.
I’m searching this same popular web presences on Peek You and seeing what I find there. Okay, I just found him over at Peek You and the difference is huge. I don’t want to post the person’s name, so I don’t want to put side-by-side pictures up, but check out a name on both, and you’ll be surprised at the difference. Which would you rather play on? Me too…PEEK YOU!
The other thing I like about Peek You is that I can look up tags for networking purposes. I put in a tag, and immediately was given a list of 55 other people who have that tag. This makes for excellent networking.
Now Spock is in beta, and that means they’re still working on a few things. Spock says they have over 100 million people in their index.
It’s Web 2.0, all about social networking. I clicked on the sign-up button for Spock, and was given exactly one sentence of information, and a box for my email. I’m just not impressed here yet. It has great potential, but I see Peek You is going to be the “go to”. That’s where I’ll be doing my people searches from now on.
In my eyes, Peek You wins.
